Madarosis

Madarosis is the medical term for the loss or thinning of eyelashes (ciliary madarosis) or eyebrows (superciliary madarosis). It is often a symptom of an underlying condition, such as chronic inflammation (blepharitis), autoimmune diseases (alopecia areata), infections (leprosy, syphilis), or trauma. It can be reversible or permanent.

Key Characteristics and Symptoms

Hair Loss Patterns: Can be partial or complete, unilateral (one side) or bilateral (both sides).
Associated Symptoms: Eyelid itching, burning sensation, scaling, or redness.
Skin Changes: Changes in skin texture or color around the eyebrows.
Types:
- Non-scarring: Follicles are intact; often reversible.
- Scarring: Caused by severe inflammation or fibrosis, leading to permanent loss.
