Madarosis

Madarosis

Madarosis is the medical term for the loss or thinning of eyelashes (ciliary madarosis) or eyebrows (superciliary madarosis). It is often a symptom of an underlying condition, such as chronic inflammation (blepharitis), autoimmune diseases (alopecia areata), infections (leprosy, syphilis), or trauma. It can be reversible or permanent.

Key Characteristics and Symptoms

  • Hair Loss Patterns: Can be partial or complete, unilateral (one side) or bilateral (both sides).
  • Associated Symptoms: Eyelid itching, burning sensation, scaling, or redness.
  • Skin Changes: Changes in skin texture or color around the eyebrows.
  • Types:
    • Non-scarring: Follicles are intact; often reversible.
    • Scarring: Caused by severe inflammation or fibrosis, leading to permanent loss.
